In the training to become an ICT system and network technician with a federal diploma, you will acquire the skills to manage the entire ICT system and network infrastructure of your company. Your area of responsibility ranges from evaluation, construction and maintenance tasks through to operations. You plan and implement projects to ensure that all available resources are used as sparingly as possible (energy efficiency). You can analyse and identify problems or faults that occur and correct them in a targeted manner. The will be capable of leading a team of technical employees. You are also responsible for the data security and availability of the ICT systems and network infrastructures.

6 learning objectives that ICT system/network technicians have in mind

  • They plan the use of IT systems and networks at operational level, specify the systems required for this and define the resulting hardware and system software as well as network components.
  • They assess the suitability of virtualisation solutions with regard to operational requirements, derive a recommendation from this and implement the chosen solution.
  • They test and monitor ICT infrastructure components (server, storage, network) and take measures to ensure ICT operation in accordance with requirements.
  • They develop archiving, backup and recovery plans for applications and data stocks, taking into account operational, economic and legal requirements.
  • They analyse organisational, technical and usage-specific aspects of mobile and location-based communication services for the purpose of integrating them into an existing company network.
  • They determine the risk situation in IT infrastructures and define suitable organisational, personnel, infrastructural and technical specifications and/or protective measures.

IT security combined with business administration

The learning content is not exclusively oriented towards the ICT sector. The focus is on topics such as network management, system management, project and IT service management, system engineering and IT security. The training to become an ICT system/network technician with a Swiss federal diploma also includes content from business administration and quality management. Targeted examination preparation (including semester examinations and internal final examination) ensures that you can take the federal examination with the best prerequisites.

ICT professional practice is required

A certain amount of ICT experience is necessary for you to start training as an ICT system/network technician with a federal diploma. The acquisition of a federal certificate of competence and/or several years of professional experience in the ICT sector are mandatory. With one of the following combinations of previous education and work experience, you can enrol in this programme:

  • Federal certificate of competence as an IT specialist or electronics technician with at least two years of professional experience in the professional field of information and communication technology ICT
  • At least four years of professional experience in the professional field of information and communication technology (ICT), of which at least two years must be in systems technology and either a federal certificate of competence or a certificate of higher general school education or an equivalent qualification
  • At least six years of professional experience in the professional field of information and communication technology ICT

Gold-plated IT knowledge with a federal qualification

The training to become an ICT systems/network technician with a federal diploma at the IBAW is aimed at professionals who are already working in IT or in the IT environment and are aiming for a higher federal qualification. This will broaden your skills and recommend you for senior positions in the field of network technology.

Get up to 50 per cent back

You will be reimbursed by the Confederation (SERI) for up to 50 per cent of the eligible course costs after you have completed the course and passed the federal examination. Their examination success is not relevant for the federal contribution.
